Phases HD for iPad

Phases HD displays the various moon cycles – from new moon to full moon – and everything in between. All major details in the app are displayed on one screen, although depending on the orientation, there are variations in content. For example, in landscape mode the majority of the screen is dominated by the current lunar phase and supplemented by the next eight phases. Portrait view, presents a monthly calendar and a light map showing the night and night cycles of the Earth.

Phases HD uses the iPad’s GPS  to determine your location and information such as the moon’s distance, altitude and age. I was surprised however that there is no way to determine the current tidal activity for my vicinity, since tides are directly related to the lunar cycle. There are a number of settings that can be adjusted such as 24 hour time, choosing the Northern or Southern hemisphere as your location and setting the distance as either kilometers or miles.

Phases HD is a polished app that fulfills its primary mission accurately displaying the Lunar phases, another plus is that it does not require an internet connection to display real-time information. I would like to see this app updated with animations to explain the relationships between the Moon, Sun and the Earth. I would recommend Phases HD to amateur astronomers but casual users may not find enough compelling content for continued usage.

You can find Phases HD in the App Store now, priced at $1.99.
